Preity Zinta has won the best actress award at the Chicago International Film Festival for her performance in Deepa Mehta's Heaven On Earth. She plays a battered Punjabi wife in the film. She could not be at the festival to recieve the honor. She attended Anupam Kher's acting school for her roles in Heaven on Earth and Heroes, another film in which she plays a Punjabi bride. (Oct 26) Preity Zinta received the Smita Patil Memorial Award at the Priyadarshini Academy Awards, Mumbai on Friday, September 19. She was honored for her distinguished work in the film industry. The annual award was established by Priyadarshini Academy in 1984 which honors both national as well international achievers. Those attending the ceremony included Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh who was the chairman of the function, industrialist Anand Mahindra, aviation minister Praful Patel, Maharashtra finance minister Jayant Patil, and Union petroleum minister Murli Deora.

Preity, co-owns the Kings XI Punjab with beau Ness Wadia with the two having paid $76 million for the franchise. Zinta hails from a Hindu Rajput family of Rohru in Shimla district. Her father, Durganand Zinta, was an Indian Army officer who died in a car accident when she was thirteen years old. She has two brothers, Deepankar, a year older than her is an Indian army officer and Manish, a year younger than her is settled in Los Angeles. Model turned actress Zinta did her schooling at the Convent of Jesus and Mary boarding school in Shimla followed by St Bede's College in Shimla. Zinta's debut film was Dil Se (1998) because the first two films, Kundan Shah's Kya Kehna and Soldier had delayed releases.
