Born into a jat family of Rohtak, Haryana, Mallika Sherawat's birth name is Reema Lamba. She graduated in Indian Philosophy from Miranda House, Delhi University. She then worked as an air hostess. She married a pilot named Karan Singh Gill. They are now divorced. She changed her name to Mallika Sherawat when she entered the film industry to avoid confusion with other actresses named Reema already in the industry. She adapted Sherawat after her mother's last name because of all the support she got from her. Mallika's onscreen debut was in Lak Tunoo, a music video by Surjit Bindrakhia. Her debut film was Khwahish (2003). Her second film was Murder (2004). Both these films showed her in racy roles and revealing clothes. She was established as a sex symbol. She made news with her small role in Jackie Chan film The Myth (2005) in which she dressed in revealing clothes. Her appearance with Jackie Chan at the Cannes Film Festival in 2005 was widely publicized. She appeared in a small item role in Himesh Reshammiya's musical hit Aap Ka Saroor - The Real Love Story (2007) and charged a hefty fee of Rs 1.5 crore. Mallika's has made headlines in the past due to her blunt statements and provocative outfits.
